Santiago de Murcia ( 1673 – 1739 ) was a Spanish composer and performer on the Baroque guitar, and four collections of his work are still known to exist . One of the important aspects of the music of Murcia is his interest in a wide range of pre-existing music for guitar. Thus the collections offer works of different styles grouped next to one another, which certainly offers a rich and varied panorama of the baroque repertoire for guitar.
This recording by William Carter, on the original instrument for which it was written does show the substantial difference between the Baroque guitar and the Lute music of the same time, as although there is much common ground between the two, the rasgueado often used in the Baroque guitar’s music makes a considerable difference to the sound.
The recording is clear with some reverberation which may be due to where it was recorded. The music itself is full of contrast and shows just how varied this music was, and it goes without saying that the performances are extremely good and therefore i can only say that if any of you readers have not delved into the world of the Baroque guitar, then this is a very apt place to start!
