Ralf Bauer – Morkens
Bergmann Edition: 12 pages
Born in Bonn, Ralf Bauer – Morkens’ piece ‘Ricordi’ translates in Italian as ‘Memories’. He has written many works for guitar and has had many pieces performed professionally and has himself performed in a large number of venues and countries. Any interested parties can find his own performance of this piece on YouTube.
It begins quietly in a gentle Dm 3 / 4 that interestingly doesn’t have a key signature in a chord driven opening with the occasional movement from one of the inner voices. At bar 22 the time signature changes to 4/4 and everything picks up with flowing semi – quavers in a two – voiced structure. The harmonies are friendly and occasional bars of 2/4 and 3 / 4 intervene whilst the semi – quavers continue for a while. Then a tremolo enters at bar 38 until at bar 55 a momentary pause leads to a new 6/8 theme again in semi – quavers that then returns to the opening idea once more, but varied somewhat from the initial theme. A brief 3 bars of the tremolo returns that then enters the coda where the whole piece concludes quietly on an Em.
The whole piece was quite pleasant and not too hard, unless you don’t like tremolo, that is! The only thing I can say is that it wasn’t a particularly memorable piece but rather unsurprising in many ways and although there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, it didn’t have any great effect on me.
