Peter Budd  : Six Poetic Pieces : Bergmann

Peter Budd

Bergmann : 16 pages

English composer / performer Budd has here produced an album of six intermediate pieces (the last one is also in duet form, so there are in fact seven pieces here!). They are friendly, with pleasant melodies and are both lyrical in form and expressive in their musical ideas.

Estudio Poetico is  set in Am with a Tempo Rubato marking, which tells you that nothing here is rushed and everything is relaxed and although the piece does move around the fingerboard somewhat, it is not too difficult to get your hands around

Valse Lento is a short, one - pager with a chromatic melody in parts that does add to the nostalgic feel to this work. It is set in Em and again moves around a fair amount, keeping you on your toes when jumping from one area to another.

Cancion is also in Em , and has a melody above a rocking arpeggio accompaniment and is again on the move somewhat  but is always nice and melodic .

Vals Romantico has the melody in the lower voice for a lot of the time,It is again in Em and , by this time, I was beginning to realise that many of the previous pieces in Em were starting to use the same harmonies and chords, and so, in spite of the difference in the actual pieces, I was aware of a certain similarity cropping up here and there.

Scherzo is the fastest piece here, and is set in G Major, with a syncopated feel and plenty of movement in the notes and harmonies.

Cabrera, is the piece in two versions. The solo version is exactly the same as the 1st guitar part of the duet, but the second part has a melody not present in the solo version. It is a Cantabile 6/8 in D Major, with a pleasant melody and some bouncy rhythms in the accompaniment.

I liked these pieces .They were pleasant and friendly and nice to play, but there was a fair amount of times when I didn’t feel they were too different from a lot of other works I have seen. The harmonies were not very individual, but then again, that probably was not the intention of the composer, and therefore I can say that players who like their music tuneful and not too hard to play might well enjoy this set.
