I don’t need to tell any of you, just how important a composer this gentleman is for our instrument. Here he has written a most beautiful piece in three main sections, beginning with a haunting Andante theme that really stays in your mind. After varying it a number of times, a sudden Presto, which is a pizzicato solo line, takes over, after a few bars of which some chords leap in - between and the theme then is a variant of the opening introductory theme. After some moments of percussive activity the opening Andante returns, leading this time to a 6/8 gentle arpeggio idea that eventually climbs up to the higher regions wherein the Andante returns once more as the coda, this time with added chords and a few harmonic notes to close the entire piece.
This is, as you might expect, a lovely piece of writing, full of engaging ideas, and different enough not to make you think that you’ve heard it all before, which you won’t have done. This is a piece that isn’t too difficult, and is emotional and nice to play.
