Damiano Mercuri

Bergmann Edition: 12 pages

This is dedicated to the great Mario Gangi, and is quite difficult from the outset, so be aware, if your technique isn’t what it ought to be!

Immediately you are thrown into some very unusual harmonies and a huge amount of chords that are quite unexpected and you realise straightaway that this composer has his own unique sound, for in spite of the Vals being ostensibly in the key of A Major, it is littered with flats, naturals and unexpected sharps all over the place.

Written in a combination of 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, and 12/8 it has several sections to it but is constantly in 2 or 3 voices, with usually one of the voices being chordal in some way, and in spite of my being usually a superb sight reader, this had me stopping and starting all over the place!

There is a very good performance of the piece by the composer on YouTube, which will certainly give any interested parties a good idea of what they will be letting themselves in for if they purchase the manuscript, but let it be said that providing you like your music full of modern harmonies , but never atonal ones, and you have a considerable technique, then this pieces could be just what you are looking for.
