Barbara Hollinshead and Howard Bass
Self Produced CD
The soprano Barbara Hollinshead and the Lutenist Howard Bass have here created a programme of music from that period written by a large number of composers, some of which will be known to you, and perhaps some won’t be.
The recording is very echoey, as if recorded in a church, which takes a little to get used to but is generally fine. As for the performances there are a number of lute solos by Ballard, Besard, the second version of the Anon piece Amy Souffres, and Vallet and others by Attaignant and Leroy, the pieces but the majority of the pieces are songs sung beautifully by Barbara Hollinshead, who tends to be well to the front in the mix, so that the lute is definitely not as loud as you might be used to.
There are a number of ballads and the occasional fast piece that does help to provide some variety in the music, for example Grand- Rues’s fun piece Lors Que Tes Beaux Yeux Mignonne, and Bataille’s Ma Bergere Non Legere.
All in all it is a pleasant recital full of lovely songs from the period of the lute, so if you like the sound of a soprano who has a very clean and clear voice then this album might be something you would enjoy.
